Director of Nursing Services

MAJOR PURPOSE: Responsible for the overall provision of the optimal achievable quality of nursing care for all residents.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:


*

Directs the coordination of all nursing services.
*

Acts as liaison between the Administrator and nursing services administration.
*

Reviews inspection reports with the Administrator retrospectively to institute a plan of correction as required. Monitors results.
*

Assists Administrator with ongoing updating and review of nursing policies and procedures to assure continued quality of care.
*

Maintains professional contacts within the local community. Represents the facility to residents and their families.
*

Cooperates with the Administrator in the overall planning of the facility's goals and objectives as requested.
*

Assumes any appropriate responsibilities and duties of the Administrator in his/her absence.
*

Ensures that nursing requirements for licensure and accreditation are maintained. Documents all professional licenses.
*

Calculates staffing levels for nursing services department as required by the State of Public Health Code.
*

Assures coordination of nursing services department's activities with those of other facility departments.
*

Maintains written position descriptions for nursing services personnel. Updates as appropriate.



QUALIFICATIONS:


*

Ability to read, write and comprehend English; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
*

Interest in the nursing needs of the aged and the chronically ill with the ability to work with both.
*

Ability to work hours as scheduled based on the requirements of the position/assignment. On call as necessary.
*

Registered Nurse licensed in the State of employment. Minimum of three years additional education or experience in rehabilitative or geriatric nursing and one year of nursing services administration.
*

CPR certified.
* Has background and understanding of Medicare guidelines.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


*

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day, proper body mechanics required--bending, stooping, turning, stretching, reaching above the shoulders and occasional lifting are involved.
*

Must be able to cope with the mental, emotional and physical stress of the position.
*

Must be able to observe, listen and communicate effectively.
*

Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, support agencies, and outside agencies.
*

Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
*

Must be able to transfer and pivot residents.
